The Cobb County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office is replacing paper logs at its Adult Detention Center with GUARDIAN RFID, a nationally trusted system for inmate tracking.

Detention staff will log safety rounds, inmate interactions, and medical visits in real time using ultra-rugged SPARTAN mobile handhelds from GUARDIAN RFID. Digital timers and automated alerts flag late or missed checks, creating a verifiable record. According to GUARDIAN RFID, detention centers that have adopted its Command Cloud platform have driven safety check compliance to 99%.

“After seeing GUARDIAN RFID in action at other sheriff’s offices, we knew it could help us streamline our detention center operations,” said Sheriff Craig Owens. “Their technology integrates into our existing ViaPath Jail Management System (JMS), enabling us to transition from an outdated manual approach to high-tech, proactive safety checks.”

By utilizing real-time Special Status tracking, staff gain instant visibility into the well-being of at-risk inmates. This technology equips deputies to intervene faster during mental health crises, significantly reducing the risk of self-harm and improving life-saving outcomes within the facility.

“Our partnership with Sheriff Owens is about modernizing Cobb County’s jail operations by moving away from high-risk manual processes,” said Daniel Quam, senior director of product at GUARDIAN RFID. “By replacing outdated inmate tracking methods with Command Cloud, we are eliminating redundant data entry and administrative bottlenecks.”

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is the first in metro Atlanta to use GUARDIAN RFID. Under Sheriff Owens’ leadership, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office has earned a reputation for operational excellence. The Sheriff’s Office is one of two in the state to receive the prestigious Triple Crown rating, showing a dedication to operational excellence.
